  1. Let us look at the image of the newspaper as it still 
  2. is today after a century of the telegraph. That 
  3. image is organized not according to a story line but 
  4. according to a date line. Like a symbolist poem, the 
  5. ordinary newspaper page is an assembly of 
  6. unconnected items in abstract mosaic form. Looked 
  7. at in this way, it is plain that the newspaper had 
  8. been a corporate poem for many years. It 
  9. represents an inclusive image of community and a 
  10. wide diversity of human interests. Minus the story 
  11. line of the connected narrative, the newspaper has 
  12. long had an oral and corporate quality which relates 
  13. it to many of the traditional art forms of mankind.
